Splashbacks for Bespoke Kitchens

In bespoke kitchen design, a splashback is far more than a protective surface. It is a key architectural feature that defines atmosphere, enhances materials, and brings cohesion to the wider design.

From natural stone to aged metals, splashbacks play a central role in shaping the look and feel of a kitchen while also serving as highly functional, everyday surfaces.

In this blog, we explore the materials used in bespoke designs, along with the aesthetic impact and practical purpose a well-considered splashback brings to the kitchen.

Marble Splashbacks in Luxury Kitchen Design

Marble is one of the most expressive materials used in high-end kitchens, valued for its natural variation, movement, and timeless appeal.

Rather than being used as a backdrop, marble is often treated as a continuous architectural element that shapes the space.

In one of our recent projects, Calacatta Viola marble serves as a centrepiece, defined by its white background and bold, dramatic veining. It is used across the backsplash, the sink surround, and extends into an expertly mitered breakfast bar, creating a seamless flow between horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Elsewhere in the kitchen, the striking marble used on the splashback and waterfall island echoes the wider aesthetic of the space without overpowering it, allowing the natural material to enhance the design.

Brass Splashbacks in Bespoke Kitchens

Brass is a material that brings warmth, depth, and subtle reflection to a kitchen interior. Unlike more clinical finishes, brass evolves over time, developing a natural patina that adds character and richness.

In a recent bespoke installation, brass was used to create a layered material palette where cool precision and warm metallic texture sit in balance.

Throughout the space, brass accents on the cabinet hardware, range and water tap added a sophisticated finishing touch, enhancing both the functionality and visual appeal of the kitchen.

This consistency ensured the splashback feels integrated rather than isolated, forming part of a cohesive material story.

Alternative Materials for Bespoke Splashbacks

In addition to marble and brass, there are several other materials commonly used in bespoke kitchen design, each offering its own unique aesthetic and practical benefits:

  • Quartz – A durable engineered surface with a consistent finish, often chosen for its clean appearance and low-maintenance properties.
  • Glass – A versatile option that can be colour-matched or finished in a range of tones, offering a sleek, reflective surface that enhances light and openness.
  • Stainless Steel – A practical, contemporary material with strong heat resistance and a smooth, hygienic surface, often used in professional-style kitchens.
  • Porcelain – A highly durable surface that offers design flexibility, with the ability to replicate natural textures while maintaining excellent performance in everyday use.

Functionality Without Compromise

While design is central, functionality remains essential in any bespoke kitchen. High-end splashback materials offer:

  • Durable protection for cooking zones
  • Heat resistance where required
  • Easy maintenance and cleaning
  • Long-term performance in daily use
